The death of George Floyd has saddened our community and, for many, has exacerbated the fears and anxiety already being experienced as we face both a health and economic crisis. Arms Wide Adoption Services acknowledges the fact that much like many other structures in our communities, the child welfare system disproportionately impacts our African American children and other children of color.
The future of the children we serve lies with us, and our commitment to them and their future is at the core of our mission.
Based on statewide data collected in FY2018:
- African American children are 1.7 times more likely to be reported for abuse/neglect than Anglo American children
- The same pattern can be seen in the likelihood of African American families being investigated for abuse/neglect allegations compared to Anglo children,
- African American children were 1.9 times more likely to be removed from their families in FY2018
When children and families in communities of color are facing even greater challenges, we are committed to advancing the child welfare system toward a more equitable and just future.
