A Thanksgiving Message from Annette Williams, Ph.D.
It’s that time of the year again. A time when families get together, share meals and stories from the past. Although a pleasant time for some, the holidays can bring sadness especially for those who have lost loved ones or are experiencing hardships.
In 2022, I wrote my first Thanksgiving article for Arms Wide. In that article, I shared losing my sister in August of the same year and how painful it was venturing into the holiday season without her. Since that time, I have had two additional losses. The death of my former husband in April 2023 and my mother in April 2024.
Whenever I share this with associates, they comment, “Wow, you’re so strong,” referencing how I’m not openly riddled with grief. The truth of the matter is that I’m still grieving, but my grief isn’t debilitating. I’ve had my ugly cries, my bouts of laughter and thoughts about losing them too soon. But I realized that dwelling in this space changed nothing. So, I decided not to languish in grief, but to live life fully every day!
How did I do this? Well, I committed to celebrating my loved ones by doing things I knew made them smile. For example, I enjoy DIY projects. As I work on various projects, I can hear my sister saying, “Here she goes again.” This makes me smile. Or, when I discuss a planned trip, my mother commenting, “that girl won’t sit still for nothing.” In essence, my family dynamics have changed, but my zest and zeal for life hasn’t.
As I continue my quirky ventures, I see their faces, their smiles and hear their voices encouraging me to continue my life’s journey. I’m encouraged that I enjoyed them while they were here and thankful that I accrued so many wonderful memories that resonate with me today.
In short, enjoy your loved ones while they are here. Prepare a legacy by passing your skills and knowledge on to others. Give the family the same opportunity to laugh and smile for generations to come!
Don’t sit still! Venture into life like you own it! Start a hobby or continue a project you’ve shelved. Volunteer, giving to those who are in need. Life is to be lived and enjoyed and there is still much to do!
Happy Thanksgiving!
